Education Sector

Schools & Colleges.

Independent, state and higher-education sports pitches face a unique set of pressures: insurer scrutiny, parental questioning, governor accountability. Pitch Score turns subjective assurance into documented evidence.

School sports pitches host rugby, football, hockey and cricket in rapid succession through the week. Usage intensity per square metre often exceeds a professional training ground — on surfaces that rarely receive equivalent investment.

Our school work is focused on safety and defensibility. Gmax readings that show the surface is within sports-appropriate hardness, traction readings that confirm grip is neither inadequate nor ACL-risk-excessive, and sward quality data that underpins the grounds team's renovation case.

Reports are written for non-technical audiences — bursars, governors, heads of sport — with the full technical appendix attached for operational use.

Typical Engagements

How sector clients work with us.

Annual Safety Survey

Gmax and traction on all competition pitches, with specific zoning on goalmouths and scrum zones for contact-sport venues.

Pre-Season Readiness Package

August testing ahead of autumn fixture list, with specific go/no-go recommendations for each pitch.

Post-Incident Investigation

Independent testing following any reportable injury, formatted for insurer and legal review.

Grounds Team Calibration

Joint survey day alongside the school's grounds team, turning test data directly into maintenance practice recommendations.

University Sports Science Partnership

Ongoing data-sharing partnerships with university sports science departments for long-term turf performance research.

What Drives Sector Testing

Why these clients commission us.

01
Parent and governor scrutiny
After any contact-sport injury, documented objective pitch data is the first thing both parents and insurers ask for.
02
EL/PL insurance renewals
School insurance is hardening and insurers now routinely ask for pitch condition evidence, particularly for contact sports venues.
03
Academy affiliation
Schools with partnership arrangements to professional football or rugby clubs need EPPP-compatible evidence on their shared facilities.
04
Grounds team workload
Grounds staff are stretched; objective test data helps them prioritise and protects them against criticism when conditions degrade.
Case Snapshot

What data-led change looks like.

Anonymised client case
An independent school with 140 hectares of playing field commissioned a full estate review after a stud-lock ACL injury during a 1st XV fixture. Testing surfaced two pitches with traction readings consistently above 55 Nm — materially above the World Rugby safe band. One of those pitches was the 1st XV home ground. A targeted verti-drain and aeration programme, documented across two subsequent surveys, reduced the readings to within World Rugby's 30–45 Nm operating range. The injury case, when it was ultimately tested, was withdrawn.
