Fixture Day · Rapid Turnaround

Match Day Assessment.

A short, targeted pre-kickoff survey that tells the referee, the manager and the broadcaster whether the pitch is match-ready. Grid heatmap delivered pitchside within 90 minutes of testing.

A full Pitch Score assessment takes half a day on site and a week to report. A match day doesn't have a week. Match Day Assessment is the rapid-turnaround version — a focused, grid-referenced survey delivered before the first whistle, formatted for the people who actually need it: the referee, the head of pitch operations, the broadcaster and the visiting manager.

We attend on match day, run a compressed test protocol across the high-risk zones (goalmouths, centre circle, wet spots), and produce a single-page heatmap report with surface hardness, traction, moisture and grass coverage. Issued pitchside within 90 minutes. Where the venue has broadcast scrutiny, we extend to include a lux verification under match lighting.

This is not a governing body certification — the annual Pitch Score is still the compliance document. Match Day Assessment is an operational decision tool: is this pitch safe to play on right now, at 14:45 today, given the last 48 hours of weather and the next two hours of fixtures?

Why it matters

The business case for measuring this.

01
Fixture clearance defensibility
Every decision to play or postpone now has documented evidence behind it. 'The pitch looked fine' stops being the only defence if something happens in the opening 20 minutes.
02
Broadcaster confidence
Sky, TNT and S4C increasingly ask for pre-match surface data on broadcast venues. A single-page Match Day Report handles the request before it's made.
03
Visiting manager communication
Pre-match pitch reports are increasingly shared with visiting clubs as standard professional courtesy. A consistent format prevents disputes about surface condition after contentious incidents.
04
Medical team input
Club physios use pre-match surface hardness data to adjust pre-match preparation routines — especially after wet weather when Gmax can drop sharply.

Our Method

How the test is run.

Every step is UKAS-audited. The equipment is calibrated, the procedure is traceable, the data is defensible.

01
Pre-arrival briefing
Phone call the day before with the head groundskeeper and operations director to confirm high-risk zones, kick-off time and broadcast requirements.
02
Site attendance
Arrive 2.5 hours before kick-off. Equipment setup completed 2 hours pre-match to avoid interfering with warm-ups.
03
Compressed test protocol
Gmax, traction and moisture readings at a 6-point grid focused on goalmouths, centre circle and known wet zones. Total site time: 45–60 minutes.
04
Rapid analysis
On-site laptop processing with pre-loaded venue benchmarks. Heatmap rendered in the hospitality office or press room.
05
Pitchside report delivery
Single-page PDF handed to the referee, head of pitch operations, and broadcaster (if instructed). Digital copy emailed to the visiting club liaison simultaneously.

FAQs

Questions we get asked.

How far in advance do we need to book a Match Day Assessment?
Block-bookings for a full season are set up in July. Individual fixture bookings need 72 hours lead time — we staff our match day schedule on a Wednesday for the following weekend. Emergency same-day attendance is available if a technician is within travel range.
Can we add Match Day Assessment mid-season to a portfolio contract?
Yes. Existing annual-survey clients can add Match Day Assessment at any point, and the day-rate is discounted against the standalone price for portfolio clients.
What's the referee's role in the decision?
Ultimately the referee's call, always. Our report provides evidence — referees have overruled red verdicts and played anyway, and they've overruled green verdicts and postponed. The report becomes part of the official match file either way.
Is this service available for rugby and cricket as well as football?
Yes. The protocol is football-origin but the underlying measurements (hardness, traction, moisture) apply identically to rugby match days. For cricket we swap traction for outfield bounce consistency readings.
How much does Match Day Assessment cost?
Priced on scope. We quote single-fixture attendance and season block-bookings at different rates, with discounts available for clients already on annual Pitch Score contracts. Broadcast lux verification is a separate add-on. Fixed written quotes are returned within two working hours of an enquiry.
